Beef Biryani Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 500g beef, cut into cubes
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 4 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 2 tablespoons biryani masala
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • A few strands of saffron soaked in 2 tablespoons of warm milk
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander and mint leaves for garnish
  • Whole spices: 2 bay leaves, 4 cloves, 4 cardamoms, 1 cinnamon stick, 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Rice: Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice for about 30 minutes. In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil, add a pinch of salt, and the whole spices. Add the soaked rice and cook until it’s 70% done. Drain and set aside.
  2. Cook the Beef: In a large pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and sauté until golden brown. Remove half of the onions and set aside for garnishing. Add ginger-garlic paste to the remaining onions and sauté for a minute. Add the beef cubes, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the beef is browned.
  3. Add the Tomatoes: Mix in the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften. Add yogurt, biryani masala, and lemon juice. Cover and cook on low heat until the beef is tender and the oil separates from the masala.
  4. Layer the Biryani: In a heavy-bottomed pot, spread a layer of beef masala, followed by a layer of rice. Repeat until all the rice and beef are used. Drizzle the saffron milk over the top layer of rice. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook on low heat for 20-25 minutes.
